It has been a long time since I wrote anything specifically about Technical Leaders. I guess that life happens and you can easily get caught up in a whirlwind mainly when new opportunities keep presenting themselves. “Look, a squirrel”! Another shiny object. The next project. The next client.
For the solopreneur, any opportunity seems exciting. Especially if it can lead to an unexpected windfall. A business strategy can seem stuffy and redundant as you chase the next big thing. As long as you pursue value-adding opportunities, you will be fine. Yes, this is true.
Until.
It is now nearly seven years since I left the corporate world to pursue new interests. It has been a wild journey, full of highs and lows. I would not have it any other way. But, now there is something missing. I can only attribute the missing element to have a need to feel in control of a destination. When you pursue multiple opportunities, simultaneously, you can lose direction. You can quickly lose sight of the “why”. The reason you started your own business in the first place. When your agenda always takes back seat to other priorities, things can get out of balance. The work you do might be fulfilling. Or maybe not. The need for that balance remains critical. You have to ask yourself “why” again and again. And if you are not satisfied, then you have to learn to say “No!”.
The last year of Covid-19 has been an opportunity to recalibrate the Why. And to correct back to a course that initially excited you to produce your best work. The opportunities will follow. Already I have shifted the balance in my work to focus much more on the things that I think excite me the most.
So, after a long absence, “Hello World”. I hope that this post finally breaks the ice and represents a new direction, back to the passions that made me excited about my work in the first place.
We are still in the midst of the information revolution. It is starting to show a dark side. The ease with which we can access information and the power individuals have to communicate through social media has amplified society’s fault lines. I think life will continue to get a lot more complicated before it gets simpler if ever it does. With artificial intelligence on the horizon, we are about to face new technological challenges that will require a steady hand to steer through the minefields just ahead of us.
Technical Leaders is my passion. The rebrand is symbolic of the desire to build something unique and remarkable. Yes, there will be shiny objects that distract us from time to time. But. The course has now been charted, and I have set sail. I do hope that you join me. To the future, and a new chapter!
